Our story
The Minbar Initiative — meaning “platform” in Somali and Arabic — is an independent, non-profit civic organization dedicated to promoting inclusive dialogue and civic participation in Somalia. Established in 2013 and officially launched in Mogadishu in 2021 in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, it organizes public forums across Somalia.
Working closely with the Office of the Ombudsman and other government institutions, Minbar ensures citizen feedback and policy recommendations reach the appropriate channels of government, media and civil society — a civic space where all citizens, young and old, women and men, urban and rural, can debate ideas and hold leaders accountable.

A trusted resource
Minbar Initiative is established and becomes a trusted resource for everyone involved in Somalia’s national dialogue.
Launched in Mogadishu
Official launch in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs — town hall debates, school civic education and outreach programs across Somalia and 6 Mogadishu districts.
The Minbar Fellowship
A residential programme named after Aden Abdulle Osman, Somalia’s first democratically elected president — hands-on training for emerging leaders.
